UKRCEMENT URGES OVERSIGHT AGENCIES TO MORE EFFECTIVELY FIGHT AGAINST COUNTERFEIT CEMENT SALES

Interfax-Ukraine – The Ukrcement association of cement companies has urged public oversight agencies to be more effective in hindering sales of counterfeit products on the packaged cement market.
"The situation on the Ukrainian market reveals fundamental violation of consumers' rights. We, as the association of largest cement producers in Ukraine, warn that production and sale of counterfeit cement threatens consumers, their health and lives. We insist on toughening oversight over the quality of cement programs and punishment for the sale of counterfeit products," Ukrcement CEO Roman Skylsky said at a press conference in Kyiv on Tuesday.
He said that this problem of packaged counterfeit cement has been worsening from year to year.
Skylsky said that the Ukrcement association jointly with NGO Union of Ukrainian Consumers conducted a many-year study on the packaged cement market. The study showed that volumes of counterfeit products have expanded in large DIY retail chains.
"Ten samples [of packaged cement] were bought in several DIY supermarkets in Kyiv during the third phase of the project finished in early 2016. The conclusion is that the situation with counterfeit cement has been worsening. Violations have been revealed in all the chains," he said.
The study also showed that construction companies consume low-quality cement along with individual consumers.
Counterfeit cement is popular because demand for cement in Ukraine is high, Deputy Chairman of Union of Ukrainian Consumers Oleh Tsylvyk said.
